On his fifth birthday, he can solve complicated differential and integral calculus problems. Later, on Japanese television, he demonstrated his ability in Chinese, Spanish, Vietnamese, Tagalog, German, English, Japanese, and Korean. Kim is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records under the highest IQ; book predicted score is more than 210 children.

Kim was a guest student of physics at Hanyang University from the age of 3 years to 6 years of age. At age 7 she was invited to America by NASA. He completed his university studies, eventually getting a Ph.D. in physics at Colorado State University before he was 15 years old. In 1974, during his university studies, he began working at NASA's research and continue this work until returning to Korea in 1978 where he decided to move physics to civil engineering and eventually received a doctorate in that field. Kim offered to be given the opportunity to learn in the most prestigious universities in Korea, but Kim chose to attend a provincial university. In 2007 he also served as adjunct faculty at Chungbuk National University.
