In a study published in the journal Nature Geoscience, the high emissions of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere indicate that the next ice age on Earth will not start at least in the next 1,500 years.

In their study, researchers from Cambridge University, University College London, University of Florida, and University of Bergen, Norway analyzed samples of rocks and variations that occur in Earth orbit.
Cause of the ice age itself can not yet fully understood. But concentrations of methane and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, changing the Earth's orbit around the Sun, as well as the movement of tectonic plates is expected to contribute to the rise time of the freezing cold.
