Davy Jones, the velvet-voiced heartthrob of the made-for-TV 1960s pop band the Monkees, which briefly eclipsed the Beatles in record sales with songs such as “Last Train to Clarksville” and “I’m a Believer,” died Feb. 29 at a hospital in Stuart, Fla. He was 66.
The Martin County Sheriff’s Office in Florida said that Mr. Jones was in Indiantown, Fla., when he complained of breathing problems and was taken to a hospital. Determination of the cause of death is pending further tests by the medical examiner.
Mr. Jones, who was 5-foot-3, was a jockey and actor in his native England who specialized in playing impudent, hardscrabble young men on TV and stage. He won acclaim on Broadway in 1963 as the “Artful Dodger” in the Lionel Bart musical “Oliver!”
Three years later, Hollywood producers set about building a new television series around him. Mr. Jones was natural Tiger Beat material: diminutive, slight of build and non-threatening, possessed of a brilliant smile and Beatle-length bangs.
The ensemble was the creation of producers Bert Schneider and Bob Rafelson, executives with Columbia Pictures’s Screen Gems Television division. They hoped to capitalize on the success of the Beatles’ cheeky films “A Hard Day’s Night” and “Help!” by creating a hit TV show with the same screwball irreverence and crafting personas in the mold of the Fab Four. The band’s name was even a wink to the Beatles.
Besides Mr. Jones — who took the role of “cute” Beatle Paul McCartney — the Monkees included actor Micky Dolenz and musicians Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork. The pre-Fab Four, as they were sometimes derisively called, soon had hit records including “Daydream Believer” and an NBC sitcom that won the 1967 Emmy Award for outstanding comedy series.
In an era when rock bands were promoted as sexually threatening, the Monkees were squeaky-clean under threat of breach of contract.
“We were under strict orders, when asked if we did drugs, to say ‘Oh, yes, we love Coca-Cola,’ ” Mr. Jones said years later. “The reality was, we were drinking beer with John Lennon or smoking pot with Harry Nilsson or cruising for girls in the Monkeemobile.”
Despite the artificial enterprise, the music endures to this day, a testament to the strength of the songs and the sincerity of the performance.
Mr. Jones and his bandmates — singer and drummer Dolenz, and singer-guitarists Tork and Nesmith — took the songs seriously and produced a recorded legacy of improbable craft. It helped that the group’s songs came from some of the era’s top writers, including Neil Young, Carole King, Nilsson and Nesmith himself.
In an interview Wednesday, Tork contended that Mr. Jones may have been the best natural musician in the group. “He had the best pitch and the best [sense of] time of us all, as musicians,” he said. “I have to tell you that in terms of raw talent, he was the most talented among us.”
Mr. Jones was not the Monkees’ lead singer; that role fell to Dolenz, an irrepressible goof with a soaring tenor. But Mr. Jones crooned some of the band’s biggest hits. “A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You,” penned by Neil Diamond, hit No. 2 on the Billboard pop chart, and “Daydream Believer” went to No. 1, both in 1967. “Valleri” made No. 3 in 1968 and resurfaced years later as a garage-band standard.
At times, Mr. Jones’s moist-eyed ballads undercut the group’s rock-and-roll credentials bestowed by Nesmith and Tork.
The group appeared in the poorly received psychedelic movie comedy “Head” (1968), directed by Rafelson and notable now for an appearance by Jack Nicholson, who co-wrote the script. The bandmates went their separate ways in the early 1970s, which Mr. Jones said ended one of the happiest periods of his life.
“I just wanted to be in the show, fall in love twice in each episode and kiss the girls,” he told a reporter this year.
David Thomas Jones was born Dec. 30, 1945, in Manchester, in England’s industrial north. As a child actor, he appeared on the popular British soap opera “Coronation Street.” He also spent a period as an apprentice jockey.
After the TV series ended, the Monkees reunited periodically as a nostalgia act on stage and television. The original Monkees, minus Nesmith, performed as recently as this past summer.
In his post-Monkee life, Mr. Jones sent up his own heartthrob image in a 1971 episode of “The Brady Bunch,” but his acting career was otherwise helter-skelter.
His marriages to Linda Haines and Anita Pollinger ended in divorce. In 2009, he married Jessica Pacheco, a model. Besides his wife, survivors include two daughters each from his first and second marriages.
Mr. Jones maintained his interest in racehorses, which he raised at properties in Florida and Pennsylvania. But at heart, he told the San Jose Mercury News in 2010, he was still a devoted Monkee.

Perhaps there are many who are not familiar brown branded 'Monggo'. However, these home-based gait brand chocolate brown in the downstream industry is apparently no longer be doubted.
Initially in 2003, the trademark is only processing about 200 kg of semi-finished cocoa beans per month to be a typical chocolate is dark chocolate Monggo. However, in 2011, this cottage industry has to process about 5 tons of semi-finished cocoa per month.
Edward Riando Picasauw, co-founder of chocolate company Mango stated the brand of chocolate consumption increases due to the shifting tastes of the people who had liked the chocolate with milk mixture, now became interested in the international flavor of chocolate is pure cocoa butter with a bitter taste sensation.
"The trend that consumers prefer milk chocolate, but are now beginning to understand the real chocolate flavor. Brown Monggo this adaptation of Belgian chocolate and the taste disinkkronkan Indonesia, such as Hazelnut replaced with cashew nuts," said the man who is fondly called Edo when met at the event Chocolate Party on Sunday in the parking lot Sarinah Building, Jalan MH Thamrin, Jakarta, Sunday (12/11/2011).
Edo was not alone, he was with his friend from Belgium, Thierry Detournay produce chocolate with 80 percent of the work of human hands, only 20 percent use the machine. While the raw material comes from the island of Sulawesi, which is the largest cocoa producer in Indonesia.
"The machine we use only to crush the beans out loud, the rest of the human hand," he said.
Kotagede origin chocolate is marketed throughout Java and Bali. Not surprisingly, the turnover of this company was through $ 1 million a year. Do not want to stop there, it plans to deliver Edo Go International. With these opportunities, he expects production and turnover can be increased 2-fold.
"Yeah hopefully can be 2 times as much," said Edo shy.
The plan, brown Gudeg origin of this city will sambangi countries like the United States in 2012. However, the Edo state plan is still awaiting an export license from the Directorate General of Customs.
"There have been many requests to contact us, it's from Sweden, the United States, the Netherlands, Germany, Greendland. But this aspect of the new legally taken care of, later only after at-ACC by the Customs, we will export," he explained.
As a businessman brown, Edo saw a few constraints other than in the field of venture capital to develop it. One is the inability of the Indonesian government in determining the world price of cocoa. Though the position of Indonesia as the country's third largest cocoa producer has been very strong in the eyes of the world.
As a result, employers in the country remains brown alarmed at any time if the international price of cocoa raw materials jumped sharply. The reason, most employers will export cocoa to foreign countries because of high prices tempted. This can disrupt the production of cocoa in the country if the raw material to disappear in the domestic market.
"Indonesia can not affect the price, it's still dependent on the dollar, but we are a third country cocoa producer, Ivory Coast and Ghana that the war could set the price, but then if there is an increase in raw material prices, we are ruined," he said.

"In 2005 we led the former rector of ITB, the late Alexander Alisabana, doing lots of research, initially had only 10 students. Before our mentor's death, advised, not to study just to decorate the library," he said.
"With embroidery round, 2006 we successfully developed the turbine with the flow of the river. At that time our new turbines generating 500 watts. Small is still, to a home is still lacking," said Deus.
Continued development team that has grown to 13 people. Finally in 2008 after doing some experiments, the turbines installed in the sea.
"In 2008 we first put on the Pantai Mutiara, Jakarta. And electricity generated can be increased to 2,500 watts," he said.
The second trial in early 2009, done by installing a turbine in Nusa Penida, Bali. "The electric power generated can be increased to 5,000 watts, and at the end of 2009 we were able to produce turbine power up to 10 kVA or ballpark has been able to turn on the power of the village," he said.
Asked how much money is spent on the construction of this ocean current turbines. "Gee, if only to fund research that could reach billions of dollars spent, the fund donations were from the late Professor. Of all the turbine components, all from locally made, only one material to be imported the magnet, because there is no sale in Indonesia.

6 Causes of Failure of Business Franchises

Many people think a franchise business is a definite step toward success. But in fact, many reasons that make the franchise did not end as expected.
In the article quoted from Investopedia, Tuesday (01/16/2012), we'll look at some considerations that you can examine before plunging directly into the franchise business.
1. Initial capital and franchise royalties high enough
Initial capital and franchise fee income tenants can greatly affect the franchise business. For example, if you want to open a McDonald's franchise, you have to have its own location (rental or owned), not to mention the franchise royalties of about Rp 405 million (U.S. $ 45,000) to hold the franchise rights for 20 years, after his time runs out then it could be extended.
If the count is calculated in total, the costs you have to spend to open a McDonald's fast food restaurants ranging from Rp 4.5 billion to USD 14.4 billion.
The most troublesome is that the franchise fee to be deposited per year. Each year, the franchisee must pay the holder of 12.5% of turnover to the franchisor. So, regardless of your turnover or as good as any business, you will continue to be bound by these rules.
The annual rent is a standard requirement in the franchise world. In fact, Burger King asked for an additional 4.5% if the franchise fee of Rp 450 million, the same as Dunkin 'Donuts is requesting an additional 5.9% for the franchise fee in the range of USD 360-720 million depending on location.
Reduced salary, meal allowance and tax, can be seen that holds the franchise license is not as easy as it seems.
2. Expensive raw material costs
For you can stay in business, most franchise owners to force the licensees to purchase raw materials from a supplier that usually there is a relationship 'special' by the franchisor. Usually, the price set by the supplier is higher than the market price.
In fact, some fast food franchise owners set a 5-10% higher than market prices for products such as vegetables, tomatoes or other raw materials. In fact, the vegetable remains of vegetables whose prices are usually about the same, but it became one of the other ways to boost the profits of the franchisor.
Never once you cancel the order raw materials from the franchisor, because it's not impossible to break your contract in the middle of the road so that you can no longer be in business.
3. The lack of funding
Most of the franchise license holder does not have access to funds is good. So, if you need additional capital, mostly franchised licensees had to pay his own pocket. In a way, the franchise holder of the license depends on yourself.
Some franchise owners know this so well that it provides an option for the franchise fee payments, capital, raw materials and equipment to start a franchise. Situations like this are usually more attractive prospective franchise licensees.
4. The lack of control locations
Some franchises have rules for not too much to open his shop in a town in order to avoid saturation of the market and earnings plummeted. However, many franchises are opening stores in a city as much as possible in order to boost sales.
That is why it is not something weird if you look at the five outlets within a radius of 8 km McDonald as the company tried to scoop up any money in the region. Franchise owners are able to gain a lot, but the suffering is the licensee of franchise outlets, because every surface in the franchise at the same location, then the turnover could fall by half.
5. Less creative
Sebauh franchises typically require uniformity. Starting from the store decorations, billboards, product offered must be equal to the maid's uniform. For people who like creativity, it can be frustrating.
So, if you are used to being your own boss, this uniformity may be quite difficult. Maybe you are not fit for a franchise business.
6. Franchise owners are less familiar with new areas
You'll often hear that the key to success in business is location, location, location. Because the location is very mentukan success or failure of a business.
In essence, if you can not find the right location to open a franchise, you will definitely difficult, because the franchisor did not get much help you in determining the location.
Pizza franchise for example. You can not easily open a pizza shop in a pretty crowded area residents. But, you also must consider the age at that location.
One great if you open a pizza shop in the crowded but its content is the parents. You better find a more quiet environment, but the contents of all young people.
Research like this is usually not owned by the franchisor. The franchise license holder's job to do this research alone without the help of the central office.
Conclusion:
Running a franchise business is a serious decision that should be undertaken with caution. Before you hire a franchise, learn a lot about the company being targeted, as well as product and location. Because even with the products and good location, you can not necessarily make a profit. So, make sure adan know the risk before opening a franchise.

A meeting with a funder managed to secure the initial funding for the Job Capital, a mentor to Burston and access to pay payroll services through the office of the investor.
With initial funding, the goal can be met and exceeded expectations. In a smart deal, Burston could earn additional shares if the Job Capital meet the target. After dilution of its shareholding in the beginning, Burston now control 100% of Job Capital. He managed to get back to the company through strong performance and the funding it gets the desired yield.
Burston said the financing deal took him to an important accountability.

Starting from the street to the shopping center, which provides drinks coffee cafe (coffee) is currently very much in number, yet few of the cafe that can exist and succeed. One local brand that carries a 100% locally made are able to survive and succeed is the Coffee Toffee.
Who would have thought, letterhead beverage products in the early days of the City of Heroes, Surabaya, was once asked to change his name when they want to try to open a branch in a mall in Jakarta because his name was not considered commercial.

On the surface, the year 2011 was one of ramped-up securities regulation and scary times for financial scammers, with enforcement cases soaring at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and coverage galore about the humbling of inside traders and municipal-bond riggers.
Along with the sexy headlines about felled lawbreakers, though, there were also troubling free passes and favors granted to the accused and the privileged.
Laws that were set up to punish bad guys got waived within days of the press releases announcing that the offenders had been brought down. Well-connected lawyers in the employ of investment firms got express-lane access to regulatory brass. Among the C-suite set, there was even one big name who left the securities industry for a few years and returned to face the humiliation of retaking the licensing tests. Of course, as it should be for the privileged, he got a waiver from the requirements that lesser mortals on Wall Street must meet.
In November, the said big-shot wound up resigning from his gig at MF Global Holdings (MFGLQ)Ltd. after the firm filed for bankruptcy, but we’ll get to that later.
The good news is that the most compromising free pass of all, the ability of alleged financial cheats to dispose of SEC lawsuits by saying they “neither admit nor deny” what they’ve been accused of, is under fire and inspiring calls for congressional hearings. Just how odious these deals have become was exemplified in a spat late last month between U.S. District Court Judge Jed Rakoff and settlement partners Citigroup Inc. and the SEC.
Rakoff said in November that he wouldn’t sign off on the SEC’s $285 million settlement with Citigroup, which had been accused of misleading investors in a $1 billion financial product tied to risky mortgages. Dissatisfied with Rakoff’s decision, Citi and the SEC went to the appeals court on Dec. 27 seeking a stay, even talking on the phone with Rakoff later in the day about procedural matters without mentioning a word about their new motion. “Misleading,” Rakoff said in a Dec. 29 order.
Rakoff, who in 2009 nixed a similar deal between the SEC and Bank of America Corp., seems to have broken the spell of courts that rubber-stamp these ultimate regulatory cop-outs.
Paying fines and walking away from liability, though, isn’t the only break that the accused have been catching. It has become routine that, on the heels of a settlement with the SEC, big banks and other defendants request and receive waivers from punishments designed to kick in as a result of their settlement orders. My personal favorites are the series of agreements between the SEC and the investment firms it accused of rigging prices of municipal bonds. Five firms have agreed to pay $743 million in bid-rigging cases since December 2010 -- all reaping the benefits of those “neither admit nor deny” clauses along the way, of course.
Start Believing
If we are to believe the SEC, some of those firms that didn’t have to say they did anything wrong really did break laws and hurt the public. Read this quote from a May 4 SEC press release: “Our complaint against UBS reads like a ‘how-to’ primer for bid-rigging and securities fraud,” said Elaine C. Greenberg, chief of the SEC’s Municipal Securities and Public Pensions Unit. “They used secret arrangements and multiple roles to win business and defraud municipalities through the repeated use of illegal courtesy bids, last looks for favored bidders, and money to bidding agents disguised as swap payments.”
I don’t know about you, but that sounds pretty bad to me. Fraud. Secret arrangements. Disguises.
Bad, perhaps, but not bad enough to stop UBS AG’s lawyers at Debevoise & Plimpton LLP from writing to the SEC five days later on May 9 to ask a favor. Through its lawyers, UBS asked the SEC not to enforce a rule that would have disqualified it from participating in securities offerings that are exempt from registration requirements. To help make the case for UBS, the letter cited nine examples of times the SEC had granted waivers for “similar reasons” since 2002, including another action against UBS. On the very same day, the SEC wrote back to say the waiver was granted.
In case you are having trouble keeping track, what we’re talking about here is an exemption from a ban from an exemption. Regulators do have the ability to bring administrative proceedings if a firm abuses the privileges it gets from a waiver. But if we need to go to this much trouble to undo the rules when somebody gets caught -- but doesn’t admit it anyway - - why have rules at all? UBS didn’t respond to a request for comment.
While all the settling and waiving and exempting is going on, the banks paying the most for legal juice benefit from remarkable access. Thanks to research by the Project on Government Oversight, the public got hard data back in May showing just how easy it was for SEC professionals to leave their posts for the private sector and, on behalf of their new financial-industry clients, to get rapid entree to sitting securities regulators.
Nice Work
The group got five years’ worth of information about SEC employees who left their jobs and, within two years of their going-away parties, wound up representing financial firms before the agency. In all, 219 former SEC employees filed 789 of the required statements (“Hey guys, we’re back, and wearing nicer suits”) from 2006 to 2010.
To give you a flavor of how these things really work, I’ll mention one of several gems among the 789.
Margaret E. “Mitzi” Moore, former senior counsel in the SEC’s Office of Compliance Inspections and Examinations, resigned Jan. 13, 2006, and within two months disclosed that she and other colleagues at her new job at the Financial Services Roundtable would be meeting March 17 with then-SEC Chairman Christopher Cox. The Project on Government Oversight got its hands on the meeting agenda that Moore submitted, and the first item on the list was a shout-out for the “good start” and “positive mood change at SEC.” The question “positive for whom?” comes to mind. Equally depressing was her memo notation that the SEC had made “good staff appointments.”
Much as we would all love to know exactly which regulators were warming the hearts of Wall Street lobbyists, the names were deleted from the agenda. In July last year, the Government Accountability Office released a study on similar revolving-door issues, but did give the SEC credit for a new policy of collecting post-employment information from departing workers.
Perhaps I am being too tough on the financial cops who pride themselves on being vigilant enforcers of rules that keep financial markets safe and fair. At the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, the Wall Street-financed self-regulator that is overseen by the SEC, decision makers have been known to be uncompromising in ensuring that members don’t skirt the rules.
With some exceptions, Finra expects members to re-take licensing exams if they have been out of the business for more than two years. It has fought and won battles against some former brokers, invariably small fries, who look for waivers.
Playing Rough
Some brokers who challenged Finra’s tough decisions have appealed to the SEC, only to have the agency back Finra with arguments that are hard to criticize. In one case, the SEC said the re-exams can be a safeguard to the public interest. In another, the agency argued that a broker who had been out of the business for more than two years should be denied an exam waiver because “in that time, there have been changes to the securities laws and regulations” with which she should be familiar. And who could argue that understanding the rules is important if you’re entrusted with other people’s money?
Which is why the exam waivers granted to Jon Corzine, the former MF Global chief executive officer who resigned from the bankrupt company last year, make you wonder. Corzine took his Series 7 broker exam in 1975, and took the test for brokerage principals in 1982, yet he landed a waiver of both of those exams when he took over at MF Global in 2010. By then, he had been out of the business since 1999, having served as the Democratic governor of New Jersey and senator of that state. Finra has said it showed no favoritism in granting the waivers.
But as history continues to get written in the MF Global story, regulators might take some lessons from their own tough talk about the importance of keeping up with regulations and safeguarding the public. Sometimes digging in your heels to enforce the rules isn’t such a bad idea.

The most indebted U.S. state, began taking orders from individuals for $2 billion of tax-exempt bonds with a preliminary yield of 2.7 percent for 10- year debt, a percentage point lower than on a sale in October.
The general-obligation sale comes as yields on top-rated municipal securities due in 10 years fell to a one-week low, according to a Bloomberg Valuation index. Yields (BVMB30Y) on AAA 30-year bonds approached the lowest level since at least January 2009. Treasury 10-year note yields traded at almost the lowest level in three weeks as the Federal Reserve bought U.S. notes.
“There’s a lot of pent-up demand out there,” said Alan Schankel, fixed-income director at Janney Montgomery Scott in Philadelphia. “Residents want to buy California bonds if they can so they don’t have to pay state tax.”
Governor Jerry Brown curbed borrowing last year to help shrink deficits. The state offered $3.3 billion in debt in 2011, the lowest amount in four years. That crimped the supply of California state and local bonds, which returned more than the full $3.7 trillion muni market in each of the past three years.
California last sold bonds in October, when a 10-year portion priced to yield 3.7 percent, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
Initial Yields
Initial yields on this week’s sale range from 0.66 percent on two-year securities to as high as 4.38 percent on some 26- year bonds, according to a person familiar with the preliminary pricing who wasn’t authorized to disclose the terms. The state is offering the securities to individuals today and tomorrow. Institutional investors can place orders March 1.
Preliminary interest rates on the offering indicate the most-populous U.S. state will pay a smaller yield spread over benchmark debt than in October.
Yields on the bonds maturing in 10 years are being offered at about 80 basis points more than top-rated debt of the same maturity, which yields about 1.89 percent. The difference is down from 128 basis points on similar-maturity bonds in the October offer. A basis point is 0.01 percentage point.

Product Apple to Unveil New IPad Next Month
Apple Inc. (AAPL), the world’s most valuable company, will hold a product event on March 7 in San Francisco, where it’s said to be releasing the third generation of its best-selling iPad tablet computer.
“We have something you really have to see. And touch,” Apple said today in an invitation, which features a picture of an iPad screen. The new device will sport a high-definition display, run a faster processor and work with speedier wireless networks, people familiar with the product said last month.
After pioneering the tablet market two years ago, Apple is counting on the new model to beat back competition from newer devices running Google Inc. (GOOG)’s Android software. The company has sold more than 55 million iPads, generating at least $34.5 billion in revenue. Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN)’s Kindle Fire, which uses Android, emerged as the iPad’s biggest rival over the holiday shopping season last year.
Trudy Muller, a spokeswoman for Cupertino, California-based Apple, declined to comment beyond the information in the event invitation.
Apple’s manufacturing partners in Asia started ramping up production of the iPad 3 in January, said one of the people familiar with the matter, who asked not to be named because the details aren’t public. The tablet will use a quad-core chip, an enhancement that lets users jump more quickly between applications, the people said.
LTE Networks
The company has been working to make the iPad compatible with a wireless standard called long-term evolution, or LTE, one of the people said last month. Carriers such as Verizon Wireless (VZ) and AT&T Inc. (T) are rolling out LTE networks to give users faster access to data.
Smartphone makers, including Samsung Electronics Co. (005930), Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. (MMI) and Nokia Oyj (NOKIA), have already introduced smartphones that work on the faster networks. Apple is bringing LTE to the iPad before the iPhone because the tablet has a bigger battery and can better support the power requirements of the newer technology, one of the people said.
The new display is capable of greater resolution than the current iPad, with more pixels on its screen than some high- definition televisions, the person said. The pixels are small enough to make the images look like printed material, according to the person. Videos begin playing almost instantly because of the additional graphics processing, the person said.
The new iPad is being assembled by Apple’s main manufacturing partner, Foxconn Technology Group. That company, which also builds the iPhone and other Apple products, gets about 22 percent of its sales from Apple, according to supply- chain data compiled by Bloomberg.
The introduction of the new iPad will be Apple’s first major hardware release since the death of co-founder Steve Jobs in October.
Apple shares rose 1.6 percent to $534.20 at 1:05 p.m. in New York. The stock has climbed 32 percent this year.

Licensing Yahoo threatens Facebook as social media patent war looms
Yahoo has demanded licensing fees from Facebook for use of its technology, the companies said on Monday, potentially engulfing social media in the patent battles and lawsuits raging across much of the tech sector.
Yahoo has asserted claims on patents that include the technical mechanisms in the Facebook's ads, privacy controls, news feed and messaging service, according to a source briefed on the matter.
Representatives from the two companies met on Monday and the talks involved 10 to 20 of Yahoo's patents, said the source, who was not aware of what specific dollar demands Yahoo may have made for licenses.
Yahoo did not elaborate in an emailed statement on details of its discussions with Facebook, but indicated it would not flinch at taking the social networking giant to court over its patents.
Yahoo said other companies have already licensed some of the technologies at issue, and that it would act unilaterally if Facebook refused to pay for a patent license.
"Yahoo has a responsibility to its shareholders, employees and other stakeholders to protect its intellectual property," the company said.
The meeting between the two companies was first reported by the New York Times.
A Facebook spokesman said: "Yahoo contacted us at the same time they called the New York Times and so we haven't had the opportunity to fully evaluate their claims."
Should Yahoo wind up suing Facebook, it would mark the first major legal battle among technology giants in the social media sphere and a major escalation of patent litigation that has already swept up the smartphone and tablet sectors and high-tech stalwarts such as Apple Inc, Microsoft Corp and Motorola Mobility.
Yahoo's patent claims follow Facebook's announcement of plans for an initial public offering that could value the company at about $100 billion.
Several social networking companies, including Facebook, have seen an uptick in patent claims asserted against them as they move through the IPO process.
However, most of those lawsuits have been filed by patent aggregators that buy up intellectual property to squeeze value from it via licensing deals, and none by a large tech company such as Yahoo.

Earth is currently surrounded by millions of space junk, from the bus-sized trash cans to the city. Space junk is not only harmful to the earth, because it could fall at any time.
However, this waste could also jeopardize the International Space Station now in orbit in. Because when two objects collide, it will be broken up to a thousand pieces. This is certainly disturbing station operational.
To overcome the problem of space junk, a number of Swiss scientists and engineers created the project CleanSpace One. Prototype satellite project sweeper waste this space was created with span length of 30 cm, and length and height of 10 cm.
Sweeper satellite is planned to be ready for release in early 2015. Thus CleanSpace One is designed to meet and destroy picosattelit (micro satellites) belonging to the other Swiss, Tisat.
On arriving at the targeted place, cleaning CleanSpace One satellite will open a 'hand', holding a satellite waste, and brought together in the atmosphere to burn.
CleanSpace One designed and built in the Swiss Space Center, part of the Swiss Federal Institute for Technology in Lausenne (EPFL). The scientists are currently mengembangangkan propulsion system (control) that enables electric CleanSpace One holding the space junk.
"The main challenge today is to prepare or a robotic hand grasping mechanism that allows the preparation of satellite Switzerland (Tisat) that," says EPFL researcher, Muriel Richard.
If this is successfully developed, the team hopes to offer and sell their homemade systems to clean up space junk in various shapes and sizes. "The space agency found it necessary to make this into consideration and preparation to clean items that have they launched into space. We want to be a pioneer in this area," said Director of the Swiss Space Center, Volker Gass.
In line with Volker Gass, Muriel Richard also said the system is relatively inexpensive CleanSpace One is expected to help the development of space trash cleanup. "This is not the construction of millions, but this level of development based on the university," he said.
According to the astronaut and professor at the EPFL, Claude Nicollier, space junk is a big problem that is often taken for granted, just like global warming. "There is a similarity of the two issues that, if we do not do anything, we have a big problem in the future,"

There is a Volcano eruption on the Moon
In a study published in the journal Nature Geosciences, in the future, people will enjoy the beautiful scenery, the volcanic eruptions on the Moon as seen from Earth.
Using information collected by seismometers installed in the Apollo moon missions when deployed, it is known that about 30 percent of the core layer that surrounds the moon is made of liquid metal.
According to Renee Weber, researchers from NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, who chaired the mapping and modeling study of the Moon, molten lava was at a depth of 1200 to 1350 kilometers below the surface of the Moon.
Then, why is there no active volcanoes in there?
Quoted from Gizmodo, February 21, 2012, the Moon's surface like a dead planet. The last volcanic eruption occurred in the Moon occurred several billion years ago.
To find out whether there will be volcanic eruptions on the moon, a group of researchers headed by Parker and Mirjam van Kan Wim van Westernen from VU University, Amsterdam trying to find the answer.
Since humans can not access the existing lava on the moon, the researchers used a sample of rock weighing 350 pounds that was taken by the Apollo of the Moon. They then put the stone in the stomach conditions similar to the Moon. Ie with more than 45,000 bar pressure and temperatures around 1,500 degrees Celsius.
After creating an artificial lava, they then analyze and create a computer simulation. Apparently, it is known that the Moon magma rich in titanium.
That is, the molten lava was too heavy to be able to flow to the surface of the Moon. In fact, so the lava can be erupted on the lunar surface, he needed more light.
"Once the magma is formed, they accumulate in the lower layers of the Moon. Something like a volcano but in reverse. Currently, the Moon is in the cooling phase, as well as the inside, "said Westrenen. "It answers the question why there are no volcanoes on the moon," he said.
But, what about the future?
In the future, cooler lava it will change its composition. Chances are, he will be less dense than the substances around them. "Magma is lighter it can easily move to the surface and form volcanoes on the moon," said Westrenen. "That would be a very beautiful," he said.
Unfortunately, none of us who live today can see the phenomenon of volcanic eruptions on the Moon. Because the process would take millions of years.

Geological data from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources reported coal reserves in Indonesia increased from 21 billion tons to 28 billion tons.
"Indonesia Coal Reserves 2-3 percent of world coal reserves," said Director of Commercial Development of Coal Ministry of Energy, Edy Prasodjo, in Jakarta.
Edy explained that the coal reserves of Indonesia's most widely spread in Sumatra and Kalimantan. The proven reserves of coal in Sumatra, as much as 3.4 billion tons and 11.3 billion tons of reserves immeasurably. Meanwhile, for the island of Borneo, proven coal reserves total 6.8 billion tons and 6.4 million tons of reserves immeasurably.
"The quality of coal in Sumatra it is low calorie, while in the middle of Borneo was a high calorie," he said.
For the total coal resource - coal deposits that are expected to be used - during 2011, up from 105 billion tons in 2010 to as much as 161 billion tons are scattered in Sumatra and Kalimantan. "There is new data coming from many companies, including new exploration," he explained.
Globally, Indonesia coal reserves reached 2-3 percent of world reserves of 826 billion tons. Largest reserves are in North America as much as 246 billion tons, followed by Russia's 147 billion tons, and China 115 billion tons.
After that, there is Australia, which has reserves of coal as much as 76 billion tons, followed by India 59 billion tonnes, the European continent mylar 50 tons, 32 billion tonnes of Africa, Africa 32 billion tons, and in the last position of the South American continent as much as 15 billion tons.

Taxmageddon-looms at end of payroll tax holiday

With Congress voting last week to extend the payroll tax holiday, 160 million workers will be spared an immediate tax hike. But the move leaves them facing an even bigger hit in January, when the holiday ends and the payroll tax joins a long list of levies already set to sharply and abruptly go up.
On Dec. 31, the George W. Bush-era tax cuts are scheduled to expire, raising rates on investment income, estates and gifts, and earnings at all levels. Overnight, the marriage penalty for joint filers will spring back to life, the value of the child credit will drop from $1,000 to $500, and the rate everyone pays on the first $8,700 of wages will jump from 10 percent to 15 percent.
The Social Security payroll tax will pop back up to 6.2 percent from 4.2 percent under the deal approved Friday by Congress. And new Medicare taxes enacted as part of President Obama’s health-care initiative will for the first time strike high-income households.
The potential shock to the nation’s pocketbook is so enormous, congressional aides have dubbed it “Taxmageddon.” Some economists say it could push the fragile U.S. economy back into recession, particularly if automatic cuts to federal agencies, also set for January, are permitted to take effect.
Obama and congressional Republicans say they hope to avert the coming blow, which stands to suck roughly $500 billion out of the economy in 2013. But both sides are bracing for another epic showdown in the weeks after the November election, as Democrats prepare to use Taxmageddon to break the partisan impasse over taxes that has blocked action on an array of issues, from modernizing the nation’s infrastructure to taming the national debt.
“I see the framework of a big agreement in the lame-duck [congressional session] to finally put this divisiveness behind us,” said Rep. Richard E. Neal (D-Mass.), a senior member of the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee. “Obama’s going to have great leverage to get something done.”
Since they took control of the House last year, congressional Republicans have needed nothing from Obama. They were the holdouts, demanding big cuts in federal spending in exchange for helping Obama keep the government open and raise the legal limit on government borrowing, known as the debt ceiling.
But in December, deadlock will cut the other way. Republicans need Obama if they want to prevent one of the biggest tax increases in U.S. history — nearly $5 trillion over the next decade, by official estimates — and block deep cuts to the Pentagon that could be triggered as part of last summer’s debt-ceiling accord.
The tax shock is set to occur after the Nov. 6 election but before the new Congress — and potentially a new president — take office two months later. While the outcome of the contest is likely to color the tax debate, Obama will either be freshly reelected or on his way out and, therefore, free to play hardball with Congress.
White House officials say Obama will not sign another full extension of the Bush tax cuts, as he did in December 2010. Obama is demanding a partial extension that would preserve the cuts for middle-class taxpayers but permit rates to rise on household income over $250,000.

Fed up with spoiled daughter, dad shoots her laptop

However, I’ve never considered destroying these items to further punish her for not doing her chores, for being disrespectful or for being ungrateful. But that’s what one father did. Tommy Jordan shot his daughter’s laptop-nine times-after he found a profanity-laced tirade she had written on her Facebook page.
In her posting, Jordan’s daughter, Hannah, complained that she feels like a “slave” because she is asked to make coffee for her parents and perform various household chores.
“We have a cleaning lady for a reason,” the daughter wrote. “Her name is Linda, not Hannah.”
She went on: “I’m tired of picking up after you. You tell me at least once a day that I need to get a job. You could just pay me for all the [expletive] that I do around the house. . . . I have no idea how I have a life. I’m going to hate to see the day when you get too old to wipe your [expletive] and you call me, asking for help. I won’t be there.”
In an eight-minute video posted on Facebook and YouTube, and occasionally peppered with profanity, Jordan gave as good as he got from his 15-year-old daughter. His video has gone viral, and now experts and parents are taking sides on whether his action deserves a bravo or is an example of poor parenting.
“Pay you for chores? Are you out of your mind? You’re 15, going on 16 years old,” he says. “You want things for your laptop. You want a new battery. You want a new [power] cord. You want a new camera. You want a new phone. You want a new iPod, but you won’t get off your lazy [expletive] to get, to even look for, a job. The only job that you have applied to is the one I made you apply to because I got the application for you.”
Having a sense of entitlement might be a rite of passage for a child, but it’s up to parents to find constructive and instructive ways to teach them gratitude. I wouldn’t have destroyed the laptop (I’m too frugal for that), but I identify with Jordan’s frustration with a child who feels entitled.
Many of our children are overindulged, even by the best of parents, says Jean Illsley Clarke, a parent educator and researcher who has studied the impact of overindulging children. She’s also the co-author of “How Much Is Enough?: Everything You Need to Know to Steer Clear of Overindulgence and Raise Likeable, Responsible and Respectful Children.”
“Overindulging is ubiquitous,” Clarke said in an interview.
Our culture bombards children with advertising messages that enough isn’t good enough. And because their brains aren’t fully developed, children have difficulty not giving in to the feeling that they need more, Clarke said. And parents compound the problem by overindulging.
So how do you know if you are overindulging your children?
Clarke says to ask yourself whether your spending on your children is taking up a disproportionate amount of family resources. Additionally, whose needs are really being met? Are you buying your child things to make up for what you felt you lacked as a child?
Clarke said if she were mentoring Jordan, she would have asked him to think of other ways to communicate his disapproval over his daughter’s posting. Nonetheless, she applauded his actions.
“Thank goodness a parent finally took a stand,” Clarke said. “Maybe this is what it took to get his daughter’s attention. What right do all these people have to criticize this father? Chances are many of them are overindulgent.”
On Clarke’s Web site, www.overindulgence.info, you’ll find some interesting research and resource material to help you avoid overindulging your children. Clarke said research she’s conducting shows that children who were highly overindulged grow up to have life goals focused on money, image and fame. They are not interested in making the world a better place or helping other people unless it directly helps them in some way. Jordan was scared for his daughter, she believes.
“My take is it takes a really good dad to go to this extreme,” she said. “Think how much easier it would have been to look at what she did and to ignore it and say, ‘Ah she’s just 15.’ ”
Perhaps Jordan should have kept his daughter’s punishment private. Maybe shooting the laptop was over the top. But at least he did something bold to reach a child who has lost perspective on how good she had it.

Microsoft Windows Phone Success in Indonesia

Holocaust Museum in negotiations to maintain loaned exhibitions
In the late 1980s, when organizers of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum were searching for Nazi-era artifacts, they sought to tell a story that was industrial in its magnitude and horrifying in its detail. The results, a widely acclaimed permanent exhibition that broke new ground in museum design, may be in jeopardy as the museum deals with demands to return one of its most powerful and haunting objects.
Little known outside the Holocaust Museum is that many of the objects borrowed from Poland almost a quarter-century ago were on a 20-year loan, and over the past few years, those loans have expired. In some cases, the museum has returned objects, renegotiated loans or exchanged existing materials, such as shoes, suitcases and prayer shawls, for equivalent pieces.
Several members of the team that built the exhibition, one of the most visited in Washington, are concerned that the drab wooden barracks from Auschwitz that gives visitors a chilling sense of the daily brutality of life under the Nazis, may have to be returned to Poland, leaving a prominent hole in what they call the exhibition’s basic narrative.
Sara Bloomfield, the museum’s director, said that while some objects have already been returned or exchanged, visitors were unlikely to notice any significant change to the exhibition. But she acknowledged that negotiations are underway to keep the barracks on the museum’s third floor.
“It is our priority to keep the barracks in the exhibition,” Bloomfield said. “We are in negotiations with our Polish partners about how to do that.”
Michael Berenbaum, a Holocaust scholar who was project director for the museum when the collection was being formed, is disappointed by changes to the exhibition.
“It was our understanding that we were going to have it permanently,” he said.
Martin Smith, a documentary filmmaker who helped craft the exhibition’s focus on narrative (at the time, an important innovation in U.S. museum design), is more blunt.
If the museum loses important pieces such as the barracks, “the whole veracity of the place will go,” he said. “The physicality of those objects speaks volumes.”
But Bloomfield and a representative of the Polish Embassy in Washington are in accord about the legal details.
“We have reviewed the loan agreements,” Bloomfield said. “We’ve always called these long-term loans.” The original understanding dictates that “at the conclusion of the agreement, the barracks will be returned, and the museum can request another loan after that.”
Witold Dzielski, first secretary of the Polish Embassy, said he sympathizes with the museum’s desire to keep the barracks.
“All the other issues are being solved pretty easily,” he said of the smaller objects that have been returned or exchanged. “But in the case of the barracks, it is a particularly difficult situation. There was an agreement, and according to Polish law, there is no way that the barracks cannot be returned.”
The expiration of the loan agreements puts the museum and Polish organizations that contributed to it in a difficult position. Few subjects are more emotionally fraught than the Holocaust; and the relationship between Jewish survivors and Poland, where most of the German death camps were located, has been particularly difficult. The enormity of Nazi violations of international law and human rights have led to decades of ongoing conflict over the ownership of looted art and property, and the relative status of different groups that suffered in the war. But the loan agreement case also raises emotional concerns about the museum’s design, so celebrated since its opening in 1993 that changes to it are seen as potentially sacrilegious.
