U.S. Unplug Ready Sanction on Myanmar

The U.S. government says ready to lift sanctions and economic embargo on Myanmar, following the improved climate of democracy in the country.
It is delivered by the Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Wednesday, Reuters reported. In a press conference, Clinton praised the progress of the democratization of Myanmar is characterized by a victory party of former political prisoner Aung San Suu Kyi in parliamentary elections.

"We listened and praised the progress that has occurred and will continue the policy approach," said Clinton. National League for Democracy, Suu Kyi reportedly won 43 of 45 seats in parliament in elections last week.

Welcoming the progress, Clinton continued, the U.S. would lift some economic sanctions on Myanmar. In addition, the U.S. also will re-open embassy in Myanmar after almost 20 years closed. This embassy will set up an office in charge of the U.S. Agency for International Development and United Nations Development Programme in Myanmar.

"The U.S. is committed to start the process of elimination of the export ban, the U.S. financial services and investment as part of helping improve the economic modernization and political reform in Myanmar," said Clinton.

Not mention any sanctions to be lifted. However, U.S. officials said the unnamed, in the sanctions being considered to be revoked is the investment in agriculture, tourism, telecommunications and banking.
Lifting of sanctions was also at the same time answering calls from ASEAN member countries at a summit in Cambodia earlier this week. ASEAN agreed, political progress and democracy in Myanmar needs to be appreciated by the lifting of sanctions by the United States and the European Union.
