As much amazing Videos Tornado Sized Solar Earth

These stunning Videos captured by a NASA satellite that shows a giant tornado moved across the sun. In fact, this tornado bigger than it looks, because of its size may be larger than the Earth, and towering hundreds of thousands of kilometers into space. And while looks magnificent on the surface of the sun, the tornado was moving with incredible speed, reaching 300,000 miles per hour (480 000 km / h).

Incredible phenomena that can not be fully explained by the scientists was filmed by the satellite Solar Dynamics Observatory, NASA for 30 hours at the beginning of this month.
The satellite, known as SDO is in a five-year mission to monitor how solar activity can affect Earth, especially the sun's magnetic field changes.

Although tornadoes are called "solar prominence" by the scientists look very similar to a tornado that occurred on Earth, its origins are completely different.
Because tornadoes are not the result of atmospheric pressure, but come the sun's magnetic field fluctuations.

you may be 'shot' if you jump a signal in Chennai

Soon there will be no place for those violating traffic rules to run. The picture of a vehicle that has jumped a signal, spotted in a no-parking zone or involved in any other offence will be clicked by the constable concerned and the owner sent a fine notice, as part of a 'beat challan' system planned by the traffic police.
This, say police, is an improvisation of the e-challan system that paid rich dividends in terms of revenue. The traffic police now book 10,000 cases a day for violations against the earlier figure of 3,000-4,000 cases a day. "The e-challan system is a foolproof way to avoid bribing," said a police officer.

Now, traffic constables will be provided with GPRS-enabled hand-held devices with built-in camera to capture images of traffic-violating vehicles and send the images to the control room where an automatic challan will be generated.

"We plan to buy 500 such gadgets and hand them over to all traffic head constables and constables patrolling the roads," the officer said. Once an image is received by the command centre in the control room at the commissioner's office, the address of the vehicle's owner will be verified with the help of a tracking system from the RTO database. A challan will be generated and sent to the violator's address with details of the place, date and time of the violation and a photograph of the vehicle.

The final frontier is yours to explore on your iPad

based on the BBC series of the same name from HarperCollins -- is an elegant and visually gorgeous app that lets you explore our known universe on your iPad. The app comes with more than 2.5 hours of HD video, dazzling 3D graphics of everything from subatomic particles to galaxies, and tons of information to read as you explore, and it offers an excellent use of the iPad's touch-screen interface to browse all the content. We got a sneak peak at the app, but Wonders of the Universe will not be available until tomorrow in the iTunes App Store. HarperCollins says the app will be at the discounted price of $6.99 initially, but will go up to $9.99 sometime after the launch. The app starts you off by explaining the touch-screen interface and how to navigate through all of the content. While looking at an animated celestial body, you can touch and swipe to look around, or touch a named star or planet to zoom in and get more information. When you're not looking at celestial bodies full-screen, panels come up at the bottom of the interface, and touching and dragging a panel upward lets you view the text or video content associated with what you're currently looking at. Videos and images are embedded in the text, so you can swipe up to read the information until you reach a video, then watch as the video is switched to full-screen automatically. Another swipe lets you continue reading, and once you get to the end you can swipe the text to the top of the screen to return to the paneled view. There's plenty of content to browse, but exploring the universe is where the app really shines. At the top of the screen you have a button for quickly viewing content from different levels. Zoomed all the way out, you can look at the known universe in its entirety, and you can switch to more close-in views, such as looking at planets, zooming in through every step, all the way to subatomic particles. You're not required to use the quick navigation button, though; you also can use pinch gestures to zoom in and touch object names to view more information. Wonders of the Universe features video commentary about places you explore in the app from Brian Cox's award-winning BBC series (of the same name) and 210 full-color articles to browse. As you explore, there are hundreds of images you can refer to for more information as well. But whether you're exploring the content point by point, or simply jumping around to different parts of the universe, the app is a joy to use and looks amazing on the iPad 2 -- and even better on the new iPad. HarperCollins says the app will eventually become available for the iPhone as well, but couldn't give an exact date at this time for the launch. Wonders of the Universe might be one of the best educational apps to date for iOS, with tons of scientific content to browse, an excellent touch interface, and beautifully animated celestial bodies you can explore. Anyone with an interest in the universe around us or who just likes to browse a well-made app with exceptional visuals should download Wonders of the Universe.

Trojan,Security company ESET watches the newly found Trojan for OS X

Recently new Trojan variants for OS X were found that take advantage of old and patched vulnerabilities to install and execute information-stealing code on affected systems. One of the newest ones uses Office documents as an installation vector and may be called OS X/Lamadai.A or OSX/Olyx depending on the malware scanner being used. When this malware was found, security company AlienVault issued an initial analysis of the threat, describing it as a Command and Control (C&C) based Trojan that originates from China and is being used to target non-government organizations based in Tibet. In light of this new malware development and following AlienVault's analysis of the threat, security company ESET has investigated the Trojan further. While one can analyze malware threats by dissecting the binaries and picking out strings and other clues as to its functions, another approach is to install and run it and see what it does. This is exactly what ESET did, and in doing so found some rather interesting results. ESET observed that once the Trojan installs it will establish a connection to a hard-coded remote C&C server located in China, and will wait in "busy" loop where it attempts to maintain its connection with the server. The server can then be used to issue commands to the infected system for uploading or downloading files, or execute scripts and commands -- the basics for allowing someone to remotely target a system, browse around on it, and steal information. ESET also noticed that the Trojan is sophisticated enough to use several encryption routines for its communication with the C&C server, which may make some attempts at identifying the C&C activity midstream difficult to do, and also uses checksums to verify the information it downloads or uploads. In essence, this is not just a quickly attempt to get random information, but has been designed specifically to preserve the data it is trying to steal. The most interesting aspect of ESET's analysis was the discovery that the C&C server appears to be run by a human on the other end of the line. When the connection was established to the C&C, ESET noticed incoming commands, which included typos followed by corrections, and the use of the BSD directory listing (ls) and present working directory (pwd) commands, which showed someone was poking around and determining what to do next. Once the person on the other end had found the location of the ESET computer's Keychain file, he or she began issuing instructions to upload the keychain along with other files on the system, very clearly demonstrating the main purpose of this threat is to knowingly and directly steal information. ESET has covered its findings in detail on its threat blog. While this threat is one of the first to show direct and successful targeting of data on OS X systems through remote connections, its presence and these analyses of its behavior should not be cause for alarm. All of the recent Trojan horses found for OS X take advantage of old software vulnerabilities that have been patched for quite some time (in some cases the fixes have been available for years). By simply keeping your system up to date, it will not be affected by these new malware threats.

The first thing worth noting is that maps are now quite a bit crisper. While many users may not notice this, anyone with a high-pixel-density screen like that on the Galaxy Nexus or Droid Razr get to see much more clearly defined roads and higher color contrast on their maps. Also, Google rearranged map labels and reduced their size to create a less cluttered map view overall.

The wreck of the Titanic experience to visit CERAM

At a point at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, lies the most famous shipwreck of all time: Titanic, which sank 100 years ago.
More recently, a group of people perform thrilling journey, explore the ocean to see the Titanic up close. One of them, Rob McCallum who recounted his experience, as published by the Daily Mail.
Here's her story:

"When the capsule gliding in the depths of the ocean that was almost frozen, more than two miles beneath the surface of the water, I looked out through the thick glass window, toward the canyon.

Of light emanating from outside the submarine, I could look over the broad ocean, which looks like a moon landscape. Sometimes, strange sea creatures in the form of passing, completing a strange atmosphere,

Suddenly, the emerging view that I will never forget. A bow of the most famous in the world, Titanic, which sank in the waters of this frozen nyari, nearly a century ago, on 15 April 1912.

Even in the darkness of the ocean floor, the front of the boat still looks magnificent, inlay fence and hull shape instantly recognizable.

Submarines that brought us continue to walk on the ruins of the magnificent ship. I would enchanted landscape of the famous grand staircase, as well as the pedestrian deck - where upper-class passengers enjoy all the rich luxury of the ship, though brief, ending when the incident damaged the collision with the iceberg occurred.

Then, about a mile from the bow, we found the back of the ship is severely damaged, a gaping tear in the metal side. However, although badly damaged, with rotting wood, relics "haunted" is still exudes greatness.

One of the three main propellers, built of solid bronze, the shape is still preserved. It weighs twice that of our submarine that weighs 18 tons.

At first glance, we also see some of the cabin interior, the exterior steel coatings have been dislodged by the disaster. Although wood and fabric ornaments have disappeared, bronze and brass walls still there steady.

Momentum is moving when he saw the master bedroom, Captain Smith, who performed heroic acts in the cruise tradition: selecting down with his ship. Of three room, the bathroom is the most visible - porcelain tub is still in very good condition.

The most amazing thing is seeing a lot of artifacts scattered on the surface of the vessel. Everywhere visible bottles, dishes, pots, spoons, forks, and even luggage and shoes.

No clothing, rugs or similar materials left over, it has been decomposed or eaten by living organisms. The existence of many scattered shoes are very surprising. Perhaps related to passenger habits, put his shoes outside as they entered the cabin. Ship staff on duty that night to clean their footwear.

We do not see any remains of one of the 1514 people killed in the disaster. They bounce off the body in a location away from the ship, or died of hypothermia in the frozen ocean, to lose hope for help.

The existence of animal life in the deep sea is one of the most interesting feature of the visit to the Titanic. As you walk under 10,000 feet, in a location that is almost impossible there is life, the organism can survive in the hostile environment. Many sea creatures can be found. There is a rat fish, crab and white, are also creatures that emit flashes of light blue, green, and white. Even so, nothing can beat the amazing pictures of the Titanic itself.

Nearly two decades, nearly 200 dives performed by the dive company. There are 150 tourists who came down and approached him: bankers, teachers, pilots, doctors, historians, even the families of the victims. Some of them have to pay up to U.S. $ 59 thousand.

I had the opportunity to see the Titanic wreck because of my relationship with the Isle of Man, sea freight forwarders specializing in research for scientific purposes, filmmaking, and investigations.

Now, 100 years of warning the Titanic tragedy, it seems like the perfect time to end the expedition to the ship, giving the opportunity he rest in peace on the ocean floor.

Sinking of the Titanic tragedy was a turning point in history, when people realize that nature can not always be tamed by technology. That the ship, no matter how great, can not be guaranteed not to sink ".

Australian drug lord has set up super lab in India

One of the most wanted drug lords of Australia, Hakan Ayik, is being suspected of setting up a "super" drug laboratory in India, media report said.

It is the second example of Australian bikie groups setting up operations in South Asia, where the precursor chemicals needed to make amphetamines can be legally sourced in large quantities in a bid to facilitate crime, according to a report in The Age.

The laboratory, capable of exporting tonnes of methamphetamine globally, was probed by the US drug enforcement administration, Australian and Indian authorities in 2010. The agencies suspect it was designed to facilitate industrial-scale illicit drug production.

Law enforcement officials believe one of Melbourne's most notorious organized crime bosses, who is associated with Black Uhlans outlaw motorcycle gang, has established links in Pakistan as part of plans to import drug or engage in money laundering.

Victoria police acting assistant commissioner Doug Fryer had warned that Australian bikie clubs were expanding aggressively overseas, including in Spain, Thailand and Indonesia. The US drug enforcement agency and Indian authorities gathered intelligence that Ayik had travelled in 2010 to India, where he sought to buy an industrial pharmaceutical factory able to produce half a tonne of methamphetamine per week.

Unique,Urine As Alternative Fuel

The depletion of oil, spur the various parties to seek alternative fuel. There are 10 alternative fuel that can be expected sooner or later replace the oil.

1. Hydrogen
Eenergi chemical that is converted into electricity and suitable for electric cars. Now that is under development, especially infrastructure for charging fuel cells into vehicles that can be done also in the conventional. With the incessant development and production of electric cars, the use of hydrogen as an alternative fuel will also increase.

2. Biodiesel
Biodiesel produced from vegetable oils or animal fats. The fuel is considered quite effective with a lower carbon dioxide emissions compared to conventional fuels. The problem, as it is made from plants or animals, could disrupt the availability of food for humans.

3. Water
So far the water as the fuel is still a hypothesis and further research. Water is an energy that does not directly be used without the help of another process. Because the water is the oxidation of hydrogen. For that technology must be developed to split water molecules into hydrogen and used as energy.

4. Urine
If this happens we do not need to bother anymore to find a public restroom while traveling. According to Dr. Gerardine Botte of the Association Technique Professor Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Ohio, in the molecule of urea (urine), there are four hydrogen atoms when compared to regular water which contains only two hydrogen atoms. Then the molecules are separated by oxidation of the nickel electrode at the base so that the hydrogen is 0:37 V will split.

5. Ethanol
Ethanol, also called ethyl alcohol, pure alcohol, absolute alcohol, or alcohol alone and is a volatile liquid, flammable, colorless, and is commonly used in everyday life. Ethanol is produced from plants, is a fuel that produces the least emissions. Some fuel is blended with ethanol is the famous E10 gasohol that consisted of 90 percent gasoline and 10 percent ethanol. In some countries already use the E85 is 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline.

6. Liquid Nitrogen
Liquid nitrogen is the one that is prepared for future vehicles. The manufacturing process, liquid nitrogen is heated, the heat extracts and produces air pressure used to drive a piston or engine so that it can rotate.

7. Air pressure
In addition to the air pressure generated by liquid nitrogen, in a simple compressed air can also be used as car resource. The use of compressed uda do not require spark plugs and cooling systems. Thus, it can reduce production costs and vehicle maintenance. Projects with air pressure engine was first developed by Tata Motors of India in collaboration with the French company, MDI.

8. Natural Gas
CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) or natural gas in Indonesia and known as CNG) fuel gas). Pollution caused by lower than gasoline and diesel. Kaerna lighter than oxygen, pollutants generated are also very low. The problem, to save it required a very high pressure. As a result, must use a tube or a solid and heavy tanks.

9. Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)
These fuels are commonly used by households in Indonesia and known as LPG. Because it consists of a mixture of combustible hydrocarbon (kalu no source of fire), public transport usage is a lot. Compared with CNG, LPG storage requires much lower pressures.

10. Organic waste
The organic waste is processed into liquid fuels, called with gasification and synthesis gas as well disebutn. This gas is mixed with ethanol so that the combustion process more easily. On a small scale, some countries have made use of this gas as an automotive fuel.

New counterterrorism guidelines permit data on U.S. citizens to be held longer

The Obama administration has approved guidelines that allow counterterrorism officials to lengthen the period of time they retain information about U.S. residents, even if they have no known connection to terrorism.
The changes allow the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC), the intelligence community’s clearinghouse for terrorism data, to keep information for up to five years. Previously, the center was required to promptly destroy — generally within 180 days — any information about U.S. citizens or residents unless a connection to terrorism was evident.

The new guidelines, which were approved Thursday by Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr., have been in the works for more than a year, officials said.

The guidelines have prompted concern from civil liberties advocates.

Those advocates have repeatedly clashed with the administration over a host of national security issues, including its military detention without trial of individuals in Afghanistan and at Guantanamo Bay, its authorization of the killing of U.S.-born cleric Anwar al-Awlaki in a drone strike in Yemen, and its prosecution of an unprecedented number of suspects in the leaking of classified information.

Officials said the guidelines are aimed at making sure relevant terrorism information is readily accessible to analysts, while guarding against privacy intrusions. Among other provisions, agencies that share data with the NCTC may negotiate to have the data held for shorter periods. That information can pertain to noncitizens as well as to “U.S. persons” — American citizens and legal permanent residents.

The director of national intelligence, James R. Clapper Jr., has signed off on the changes.
“A number of different agencies looked at these to try to make sure that everyone was comfortable that we had the correct balance here between the information-sharing that was needed to protect the country and protections for people’s privacy and civil liberties,” said Robert S. Litt, the general counsel in the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, which oversees the NCTC.

Although the guidelines cover a variety of issues, the retention of data was the primary focus of negotiations with federal agencies. Those agencies provide the center with information such as visa and travel records and data from the FBI.

The old guidelines were“very limiting,” Litt said. “On Day One, you may look at something and think that it has nothing to do with terrorism. Then six months later, all of a sudden, it becomes relevant.”

Since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the government has taken steps to break down barriers in information-sharing between law enforcement and the intelligence community, but policy hurdles remain.
The NCTC, created by the 2004 Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act, collects information from numerous agencies and maintains access to about 30 data sets across the government. But privacy safeguards differ from agency to agency, in some cases hindering timely and effective analysis, senior intelligence officials said.

Solar storm is a 11 year cycle and has a strength 10 times more than the 'solar wind' normal. The storm is expected to end Friday morning, March 9, 2012 with some residual throws charged particles toward Earth.
Solar storm reaches its peak in North America with the appearance of the aurora or Northern Lights. "Aurora is likely to be a kind of drug.

According to solar physicist from Nasa, Alex Young, a solar storm is giving human beings a little jolt. Even so, the earth must be prepared for the peak of solar activity, the end of 2013 to 2014.
There are three ways how solar storms can interfere man-made technology, through a magnetic field, radio, emission of radiation.

Product Smarter appliances lead consumer trends

Consumers looking for "smarter" appliances on the Chinese mainland are predominantly busy workers, which means "simplicity" and "convenience" are vital product characteristics.
Tapping into this trend, manufacturers are designing home appliances that are smart as well as user-friendly.

Midea's soy milk makers are an example. As well as making soy milk, they can produce fruit and vegetable juices and rice paste, simply by pressing the appropriate button.
The Chinese mainland production company's intelligent rice cooker with voice prompt function is a real eye-opener.

Germany's Glanz launched the Uovo, the first spherical-shaped microwave oven in the world - and appears to have marked a new age of "intelligent manufacturing" in China.

Electric kettles from Mainland firms Haier, Supor and other brands with automatic shut-off and boil-dry protection features are immensely popular.

Global brand Philips' AC4002 air purifier has an intelligent sensor that can automatically filter air in a room.

Coffee makers are popular among young people and are user-friendly with anti-drip features.

Vertical steamers change the way people do their ironing and allow users to iron their clothes hanging on a stand instead of lying horizontally on a flat surface. They are new favourites among housewives.

Prices of smart appliances range from just a few hundred yuan to over Rmb10,000. Consumers can buy appliances of different grades.

Some manufacturers are producing flagship products to meet the needs of high-end consumers.

For example, Midea's steam inverter microwave ovens have a built-in version, selling at close to Rmb10,000.

Angel's refrigerator-style drinking fountain has large cooler and freezer compartments.
Market demand means greater technological innovation from manufacturers. They need a good grasp of market trends, proactively adjusting their development strategies and stepping up R&D and product improvements.

Caused the sinking of the Titanic by Month

Over the past 100 years, the blame for the tragedy of the sinking of the luxury Ttanic placed 'on the shoulders of' chunks of ice. But, researchers recently discovered a new actor, the moon.
Although the ship was sinking due to hit the giant iceberg, but the researchers found that three months before the incident, the moon is in an odd position.

A combination of astronomy is very rare on January 4, 1912, including the position of the moon closest to earth in 1400 years. This resulted in very high tides.

This strange conditions cause ice floes sank into the sea. Additionally, chunks of ice were floating and flying from their usual resting place off the coast of Canada, to the south.

According to researchers, as quoted from the Telegraph, this chunk of ice travel time to the scene where the Titanic sank on April 14, 1912 and 1500 killing passengers and crew, just three months. Research scientists are published in the magazine Sky & Telescope.

Professor Donald Olson of Texas State University who led the study said, "The vessel arrived at high speed to the ice floes, and the ship was sinking. But, the conditions of this month to explain how much the amount of ice can exist in the path of the Titanic. It's not unusual. "

Tides are unusually high is known as a wave spring. This condition is caused by the position of the moon and sun are in a line so that the gravity of each increased.
However, Olson insisted it did not know where exactly the chunk of ice in January 1912, before finally crashing into the Titanic in April 1912. "No one knows. But, this is a plausible scenario is scientifically," he said.

Ended a decade-long ordeal after being saved by the Palestinian security forces. However Baraa, as published by the Daily Mail, Monday, January 23, claimed to be happy once again breathe free air.

"I'm happy now. My life has really begun," he said.

Both her parents had been divorced since he was four years old. Baraa awarded custody to his father, Hassan Melhem, temporary custody of the brother of Baraa given to the mother, Maysoun, because Hassan is often rude.

Baraa was first locked in a dark bathroom by his father when he was 10 years, after trying to run away from home. He was beaten, fed infrequently, and only allowed out at night to do homework.
He has also just given a blanket, radio, and a razor by Hassan along with his stepmother, who repeatedly urged him to commit suicide. "I do not hate my father, but I hate what he did to me. Asteroid 2012 DA14 Will Hit Earth in 2013

Asteroid along 150 feet or 45.7 meters will be within relatively close to Earth. So close, space rock, named 2012 DA14 will float under the man-made satellites orbiting around our planet.
According to the impact of risk Ameriksa Space Agency (NASA) said the chances of the asteroid manghantam Earth is very low, but on February 15, 2013, was only about 17,000 miles or 27358.8 miles, closer than geostationary satellites are launched humans into space.

If the asteroid were to hit Earth's size, it will cause an explosion equivalent to a nuclear bomb.
Two astronomers from the Observatorio Astronomico de La Sagra, Spain discovered in 2012 DA14 at the end of February 2012.

Calculated results obtained, the space rock's orbit is very similar to Earth. Some reports speculate that the possibility of a collision on February 15 of next year. However, astronomer Phil Plait, Bad Astronomy blog owner, despite the impact.

"Asteroid 2012 DA14 is almost certainly not going to hit Earth in February next year. Chances are very low, almost zero. With no impact on the future aside, for now, we are still safe," he said, as published by the Daily Mail, Monday, March 5, 2012 .

Corresponding distance is even closer than man-made satellite, Plait said, there's nothing to worry about. "Seventeen thousand miles far below many of our satellites orbiting the Earth. As far as I know, this is the closest asteroid that size over the years. However, he will not hit Earth. In astronomy, 17,000 miles is a short distance, but in human terms, there would be no threat. "

After 2013, Asteroid 2012 DA14 will be back close to Earth in 2020. However, according to Plait, the chances for human harm is lower than the chances of someone being struck by lightning in his life. Which is 1: 100,000.

2040 Threats

Asteroid 2012 DA14 While very rarely mentioned its existence, astronomers are now busy in anticipation of possible threats caused by a space rock the next 28 years. Precisely February 5, 2040.

Astronomers the world, from the European Space Agency (ESO) and the U.S. space agency (NASA) is now being focused on the movement of an asteroid that size is slightly longer than a football field. His name, Asteroid 2011 AG5. Chances of hitting the Earth is 1:642, the greatest opportunity ever.

Although the size of space rock that does not destroy the species of dinosaurs 65 million years ago, scientists do not underestimate this asteroid. NASA has placed objects in near-Earth objects to be monitored. Asteroid is even so important agenda of the UN Science Committee meeting or the United Nations Scientific and Technical Subcomittee earlier this month in Vienna.
For, if the asteroid passes and hit a city, millions of lives will undoubtedly melayang.Asteroid 2012 DA14 Will Hit Earth in 2013

Boosting the economy through natural gas exports

IN AN OTHERWISE gloomy economic time for the United States, the boom in natural-gas production has been a dazzling bright spot. Thanks in large part to expanded production of previously inaccessible shale gas, the United States has passed Russia as the world’s largest gas producer, with an output of more than 23 trillion cubic feet in 2011. As the price of natural gas has plummeted, consumers have benefited from lower electricity rates, the cost of manufacturing in the United States has gone down, and thousands of jobs have been created.

As recently as 2005, many experts thought that the United States would need more liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports. Now, the U.S. industry is gearing up to export gas, including LNG. The Energy Department recently approved Cheniere Energy’s plan to export 2.2 billion cubic feet a day of LNG from a facility in Louisiana that was originally intended to take in imports. The department is considering applications from seven other companies. If the Energy Department approves them all, the United States would be capable of exporting a quantity of gas equal to almost a fifth of current consumption.

That prospect has some people worried. Environmental groups such as the Sierra Club fear that increased “fracking” for shale gas would harm groundwater. But most of the pushback comes from certain segments of the business community that fear that diverting U.S. gas into world markets would raise prices for everyone from steel companies to electric utilities. Rep. Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) has proposed a bill that would prohibit any new LNG export facilities until 2025.

Unlike oil, gas does not trade on a unified world market. Prices in Asia are four times higher than in the United States. Obliging U.S. customers to compete with, say, Chinese customers, would exert upward pressure on U.S. prices. The Energy Department estimates that, by 2035, exports could raise gas prices by between 3 percent and 9 percent. Electricity prices may rise by up to 3 percent.

But the benefits of expanded exports must be weighed against these predicted costs — which are neither inevitable nor dramatic. Among them would be a potentially significant reduction in the U.S. trade deficit, which would mean less need for the United States to borrow from its Asian trading partners. Foreign demand gives U.S. companies an incentive to produce more, which creates jobs; if they don’t expand production, then, over time, supply will dwindle, and domestic prices will creep up anyway. Don’t forget that taxes and other fees on gas production help state and local governments balance their books. Already, low prices, and the resulting reduction in drilling, have cost many communities revenue.

The environment could benefit from exports, too; countries could use U.S. gas to replace coal. Some day, U.S. gas exports could help offset the geopolitical power that Russia derives from supplying Europe gas.

Some increase in U.S. exports appears inevitable: Under current law, the federal government must approve gas sales to countries, such as Canada, Mexico and South Korea, with which the United States already has free-trade agreements. For other countries, the government must grant approval unless it finds that “such action is not consistent with the public interest.” We don’t think opponents can make that case persuasively.
